The Book & the Body. Come to the Tuscan hills for a week-long, unique workshop in which we explore the structure of the book and practice yoga under the Italian sun. Surrounded by olives, grapes, wild fennel, and flowers, Villa Lucia, located in the shadow of the medieval hill town of Montevettolini, is our host for this, our second year of the Book & the Body. Each day begins with an invigorating class of yoga outdoors. The bulk of the day is spent learning a variety of book structures and discussing alternative methods of developing content in our books. A yoga class intended to release the day's work makes the transition to evening, which is rounded out by a communal meal under a massive pine tree overlooking the broad valley below. Ken Botnick will lead the book workshop. Ken is a professor of art at Washington Unviversity in St. Louis, and has over twenty years' of experience in the book arts. His work is in collections around the world and his belief is that craft is one of the most humanizing activites we can engage in. We will make coptic stitch, long stitch, Japanese stitch, as well as innovative tunnel and flag books. Each student will make pastepaper covers for a number of their books. Natalie Morales brings fifteen years' experience to her yoga practice. She is a certified Ashtanga instructor and teaches all of her classes with humor and an intention toward what is best for the individual. No prior experience in either books or yoga is necessary in order to participate and enjoy in this workshop. All that is needed is a desire to work and share the experience, learn, laugh over leisurely, magnificent meals, and drink in this marvellous landscape.
